Mordecai stands upright at the Persian royal gate while surrounding officials bend low before the richly robed court leader. The scene portrays the crisis in the Book of Esther when the king’s servants obey the command to honor Haman, but Mordecai refuses to bow down to him. His refusal exposes his Jewish identity and provokes Haman’s wrath, setting in motion the danger that will threaten the Jews throughout the empire.
The palace setting, formal garments, and watchful attendants emphasize the pressure of public obedience in a royal court. Mordecai’s stillness becomes an act of covenant faithfulness: he will not give misplaced honor where worshipful submission would compromise loyalty to God. This artwork serves well for teaching on Esther, courage under pressure, faithful resistance, pride, persecution, and God’s hidden providence in the deliverance of His people.
