Justice, Mercy, and the Gift of God

Justice stands with scales and sword beneath the solemn words, “The wages of sin is death,” while a fallen man reaches upward from the ground. Beside him, a white-winged angel bends down in mercy, guiding him toward the promise carved into the rock: “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” The composition contrasts judgment and grace, placing the sinner between the righteous sentence of divine justice and the saving invitation of God’s mercy.
