Job is shown in the foreground with a shaved head and painful sores across his skin, his face marked by affliction and searching endurance. Behind him stand his three visiting friends, robed as ancient counselors, observing him with solemn and troubled expressions. The composition reflects the opening of Job’s suffering after the loss of his family, possessions, and health, when Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar come to sit with him in grief. Their presence recalls the tension of the Book of Job: companionship begins in silence and mourning, but soon turns into debate over suffering, righteousness, and the mystery of God’s justice. This artwork is suited for teaching on lament, pastoral care, suffering, perseverance, and the limits of human counsel before divine wisdom.
